Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a device that is used for applying a low-intensity sinusoidal electric current to the brain. This is done by the placement of electrodes on the scalp. This technique has been thought to have positive effects on the brain’s own oscillations, which has been and is still being tested for its capabilities in the improvement of treatment of brain-related conditions as well as enhancing brain functions. Like its counterpart transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), tACS is a neuromodulatory technique but uses a sinusoidal current at a selected frequency to interact with the brain’s natural cortical oscillations. tACS is performed by placing a large electrode over the interest area that then applies stimulation and a reference electrode is placed over the neutral area.
