Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Devices Overview
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), also known as biventricular pacing, is a type of therapy which is indicated for patients suffering from advanced heart failure or ventricular dyssynchrony. The therapy involves pacing of the left ventricle (LV) and almost or totally simultaneously pacing of the right ventricle to improve ventricular synchrony, thereby improving LV systolic function. A CRT system consists two components- the pulse generator or the device and the second component is the thin, insulated wire leads. The CRT device works by delivering tiny amounts of electrical energy via the leads to the heart. This delivery of electrical impulses to the heart is the restoration of the normal timing of the heartbeats. This is achieved by causing both the ventricles to pump blood together in an efficient manner.
